    Resting Comfortably

The reindeer are finally resting after a very busy year. Everyone did very well during the Christmas Eve run, and of course my horse Amerigo, did his part for the Feast of St. Nicholas.

What’s that? You didn’t know I had a horse? Actually, Santa Claus had our horse, Amerigo, long before we began using reindeer. My grandfather used to ride Amerigo up and down from Spain into France, England and the Netherlands delivering candies and toys in shoes that were left outside to dry. He would always do this on the Eve of St. Nicholas Feast Day in honor of our ancestor St. Nicholas.

Towns would have big festivals and celebrations, and grandfather would give presents to children to let them know we were still around. It is not as big as our Christmas Eve run, but it is an important celebration, nonetheless.

We began using reindeer, when we had so much to deliver on Christmas Eve that Amerigo couldn’t carry it all. My father did his first run with reindeer in 1799, and has been using them every year since.

So everyone is resting and we are anxiously waiting the birth of the new babies. Beginning around February and lasting until late March the new fawns (boys) and calves (girls) will begin to be born. It is always an exciting time around here. We had lots of new babies last year, and expect a whole new group this year, including a first time birth for Snowflake, who is only a few years old herself.

Some of the other mothers that will have babies are, Cinnamon, Alabama, Vixen, April, Sparkle and Helena to name several. There are actually more, but these are the reindeer I have used in the past on my sleigh, and mostly because of that, are the most interesting to boys and girls.

We will keep you updated on the progress of our Moms and how they are doing. In the meantime if you have a good name that you wish to share send it to postoffice@santaclausstories.com and we will consider it for one of the babies.
